2005-09-04 - 11:43 p.m. August 24, 2005 “To what extent should anyone of us – sick or well – be allowed to do something in the interests of saving our own lives at the risk of harming the lives of others.” “All of us are members of the same great human endeavor whose tents are pitched on different ground, causing us to look out on the passing scene from different angles.” “ I used to think certain jobs were ‘cool’, and were likely to inspire passion. Now I know passion is rooted in deeply felt experiences, which can happen anywhere. I used to think life presented a five-page menu of choices. Now I think the choice is whether to be honest to ourselves and others, and there is more of an uncovering, a peeling away of layers, discovering talents we assumed we didn’t have. I used to treasure the innocence of first love. Now I treasure the hard-fought. I used to want to change the world. Now I’m open to letting it change me.”
