2006-03-03 - 10:37 a.m. Journal excerpt from February 18th, 2006 It’s a sunny bright day in Dakar and taking a morning walk by the oceanfront was quite a treat for me! The RIM Pirates and Swashbucklers have been winning every game so far, despite the tiring journey we had yesterday: meeting by 5.30am at the bureau in Nouakchott and 16+ hours cramped in three small buses (with no luggage storage room!!), multiple flat tires and several stops for which the only way in and out of the vehicles were the windows!!! (I landed flat on my face a few times when my fellow volunteers helped me climb back into the bus… or should I say threw me back into the bus??!!) Note that it took a private car only 5 hrs. to get here yesterday from Nouakchott… I don’t quite understand the 11 hrs. difference!!! :-p I’m not planning on doing any sight-seeing this year (as opposite to last year) and will be going to many softball games donning my RIM Seamen shirt along with my skull flag, bandanna and braided pigtails. The nightlife will be filled with dancing Inshallah… living up to my WAIST name “The Shaker”! I’m looking forward to take on the rhythm with my RIM friends! I’ve been in Dakar less than 24 hours but already feel refreshed and relaxed: it’s good to take a break from Mauritania!
